Taiwan Explains VAT Refunds For Foreign Exhibitors

Taiwan's national tax authority has released guidance on VAT refunds for foreign exhibitors, following a number of questions received from overseas firms.
Under Taiwan's rules, companies with no fixed place of business in Taiwan that purchase eligible goods or services over TWD5,000 (USD164) in one fiscal year can apply for VAT refunds for costs incurred in participating in an exhibition and for temporary business activities.
However, the concession is allowed only if the company's home country provides reciprocal treatment for Taiwanese firms. The tax agency has confirmed that these countries are: Germany, Switzerland, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macau, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Austria, Finland, France, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Slovenia, Belgium, and Liechtenstein.
Companies seeking a VAT refund must retain invoices; receipts from utilities companies; receipts for transportation services; a breakdown of business tax and value-added tax incurred, for approval from the Ministry of Finance.
The guidance sets out other specific rules and excluded goods and services. The tax agency said further guidance is available on the "Exhibitor's VAT Refund System" section of its website.
