Switzerland Throws Weight Behind Global Digital Tax Fix

Thursday, July 26, 2018

Switzerland wants to see the introduction of an internationally applicable standard for the taxation of the digital economy.

Following a meeting of G20 finance ministers, the Swiss Federal Council said that the country hopes there will be a careful examination of the situation regarding digital taxation.

The Council stressed that taxation of the digital economy should be based on the principle that taxes are levied where value added is created. It said that only a uniform international approach will ensure that the system is sufficiently reliable for businesses and prevent double taxation.

The Council added that international discussions should continue through 2019 and lead to the publication of an OECD report on digital taxation in 2020.
