Dip In Taxpayer Filings In South Africa

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

The South African Revenue Service received 5.74m tax returns by the end of the 2016 filing season for non-provisional taxpayers, compared to 5.94m in 2015.

This number includes 4.16m returns from individuals, 47,000 from trusts, and 1.52m for previous tax years. As in the previous year, SARS processed 99.9 percent of all returns electronically.

It also paid out 1.98m refunds worth ZAR15.5bn (USD1.1bn), with more than 93 percent of these refunds being paid within 72 hours.

Announcing the preliminary results, Commissioner Tom Moyane said: "SARS wishes to express its appreciation to all those taxpayers that submitted their tax returns before the deadline. Paying tax is the highest form of patriotism."
