Tuesday, March 1, 2016

The Australian Government has announced the appointment of Karen Payne to the new position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Board of Taxation.

According to the Treasury, the new role will be central to the operations and policy of the Board of Taxation.

In a statement, the Board said the appointment was "a significant step in recognizing the increased role that the Board of Tax is playing in the development of long-term tax policy."

The role will commence on March 31, 2016. Payne has been on the Board since 2015 and a member of the advisory panel to the Board since 2010.

"[Payne's] key expertise includes taxation of domestic and international funds (property, infrastructure, equity and private equity), due diligence, structuring for corporate mergers, reorganizations, takeovers, and acquisitions, including cross-border finance arrangements and global loan facilities. She has particular skills in managed investment trusts, debt, equity, and thin capitalization provisions," the Treasury said.

The Board advises the Treasurer on how to improve the general integrity and functioning of the tax system. It is also tasked with commissioning research on tax matters approved or referred to it by the Treasurer.
